Welcome AdamnEveFantasies,

There is no number 1. For the internet savvy or ambitious they either use what they know or they pick a shopping cart with the features they want and learn how to use it. The people without the time or expertise to learn something new benefit most from using one of the recommended turnkey hosting systems where there is someone knowledgeable to assist in all aspects.

In either case this business is not a set it and forget it, unless you want to fail! Creating unique content and lots of it using a Blog or changing product descriptions takes time. In fact Search Engines reward sites that add content over a long period of time. That with social networking and other techniques will get your site visited by your target audience, allowing you to make sales.

Really it makes no difference which shopping cart is used. As long as it can display the products and allows customers to complete a sale. Looks only have a minor affect, what good is a great looking web site that takes forever to load or even fails to load.

To add a spin on what Mike said ... get a list of the things you feel are important to a website and if you are not able to code all those things into the cart software your self then pick a cart that has them already or a company that is familiar with the cart enough to put them in for you ...

A good example of this is mobile templates ... there is nothing really tricky about them, and there are a couple of ways to make them happen, I currently like the new WordPress way that creates a CSS using the screen display size and not the device OS ... but on a heavy website (like a cart with lots of images) it may be better to have a separate template for mobile based on OS to ensure good load times ...

So use your list of important things, they must be part of your decision when picking a cart and or a hosting service.

I have to disagree with some of Dan O statements. I believe a Responsive template / theme if done right is much better than a Device / OS mobile system.

Both a regular and mobile web site should be designed to run as fast as possible, so with that priority in mind a Responsive design should be faster since it is based on CSS and should render faster than a Device / OS system that relies on scripts to determine the Device first then send the user to that template.

Of course the final choice is determined by the web site owner experience and availability of pre defined templates available for the shopping cart. Also if someone has spent a lot of time and money on their current template design and it's not built to be responsive, then it might be faster to use a new Device / OS theme then trying to rebuild the current theme to be Responsive.

If you decide to go the Responsive theme route, I highly recommend using this site below to help you choose the theme you want and see it in action:

Some Zen Cart templates using the ScreenFly Tool:
http://quirktools.com/screenfly/#u=h...&h=600&a=1&s=1

and

http://quirktools.com/screenfly/#u=h...&h=600&a=1&s=1

Notice the nice adjustment going between the different device screen sizes.

There are some Device emulating programs like IPhoney that you can download to emulate an IPhone on your home computer, however I don't know of any Online systems that allow for testing of various Device / OS themes. If anyone knows of any, then please provide them.
